One of the most important things we do for our email clients is the pre-send SPAM test report, this enables our clients to get an indication of whether their email is likely to get through various SPAM filters and into the right inbox.
In this blog post, we will look at some of the most commonly used terms that will get filtered out by many ISP’s and individual SPAM filters, we will also take a look at how to improve the content by just changing a few of the words used in any standard email campaign.
Clients and recipients are using increasingly sophisticated filters which means less email gets through
As many ISP’s such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail have special routers dedicated for their email domains that constantly analyse every email. More and more email is becoming automatically blocked for a number of reasons, one is that your email contains words or phrases that they have prohibited, the other is that your email address has been blacklisted as a spammer.
Assuming that your email gets through the ISP filters, it does not necessarily mean that it will reach your clients inbox, as more and more people are tuned in to using filters on their email client or virus and spyware software.
You may ask “So how do SPAM filters work?”
These filters work by examining the words in the subject line, and the content of your email, against lists of known spam words and phrases.
So a well written and thought out subject line and content can make the difference between a zero open rate and a fantastic read rate.
Here are some of the commonly used phrases that appear in SPAM filters.
- Free!
- Special
- Travel
- Airport
- Opportunity
- Private
- Football
- Team
- Hire
- Complimentary
- Adventure
- Restaurant
- Theatre
- Celebration
- Garden
- TV
- Holiday
- …The list of course goes on!
Here we will demonstrate how by changing just a few words in your email campaign you can reduce the chances of your email ending up in the spam box.
